Tanira Sethi, a NIFT graduate in textile designshowed she is a chip off the old block as she launched her eponymous label that presents a a range of pure woven, limited edition hand-painted and the first ever fine cashmere lace saree with a soiree over the weekend of 14 and 15th January. The evening saw a turnout that included some of the best names from Delhi’s social circuit. That her collection is super stlyish is a given since she has her dad the dapper Sunil Sethi who has been successfully spearheading the Delhi fashion week for sometime now helping her hone her talents Also nice to see was the justifiable pride of parents Bharti & Sunil Sethi who played host and spent time with the guests as they enjoyed viewing the collection.
Guests who came included: Amitabh Kant, Devi Cherian, Neelam Pratap Rudy, Sameer Mehra of Ezma, Shon Randhawa & Geeti Mehra of Patine, Himanshu Dogra of Illum Designs; Designers Ritu Kumar, JJ Valaya, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Namrata Joshipura, Ashish & Misha Soni, David Abraham & Kevin Nigli, Reynu Taandon, Leena Singh, Varun Bahl, Anju Modi, Manav Gangwani, Gaurav Gupta, Rahul Mishra, Pankaj& Nidhi, Ankur & Priyanka Modi, Samant Chauhan, Amit Aggarwal, Pallavi Mohan, Nikhita Tandon; Vikrum Baidyanath, Ramola Bachchan, Prateek Jain of Klove, Sarada Muraleedharan (D-G of NIFT), Noyonika Chatterjee and Sonalika Sahay.
The collection uses 100 per cent woven cashmere wool, developed in various weaving centres all over the country,it took a year to plan, and finally produce, considering the delicateness of the yarn.“I always wondered, if a seven meter shawl can be woven, why not a sari? I combined four things I loved-art, design, fashion and heritage, for my first ever collection,” says the 23-year-old Tanira.
Interestingly, the line is segmented into three individual design ideologies—the first one offers pure woven cashmere saris, the second is a range of ultra luxe hand painted saris in cashmere, which is where you find a rather captivating mix of traditional heritage seamlessly combined with modern art. The piece de resistance is the world’s First ever Cashmere Lace saree by Taani by Tanira Sethi incorporating fine cashmere Leaver’s lace fabric conceptualized by Ezma Fine Cashmere and woven by Beauvillian Davoine France. The palette ranges from soothing indigo blues, pleasing charcoals, muddy browns, ecru, with accents of reds and maroons used as effective highlighters.
“I am believer in German industrial designer Dieter Rams’ philosophy of ‘as little design as possible’ and that is real luxury because you are following the basic tenets of design without tinkering with the aesthetics. For me, good design is usefulness, self-explanatory, unobtrusive and also a form of self-expression, which can be seen in my final product. But above all, my line, will hopefully never become antiquated and that will be real success for me”. says the petite Tanira.
